Bentota’s Lunuganga, which Geoffrey Bawa dubbed ‘garden within a larger garden’ is hidden behind a steep dust road. It is a haven for both domestic and international tourists providing a break from the varied natural environment of Sri Lanka. Bawa received the former rubber and cinnamon plantation in 1948 to construct something that would be shaped by his present and future dreams and imagination. He eliminated an extractive colonial occupation and promoted the development of a diverse ecosystem that is mainly home to endemic trees and wildlife by turning the area from a plantation into a lawn.

The most well-known architect in Sri Lanka, Geoffrey Bawa is the painter of the centrally located mind-blowing spiral staircase and the unique use of rustic colour schemes throughout. His art combines Dutch, Moorish and Oriental elements uniquely.
